Giant Plastic Tap (Build a Giant Plastic Tap)

Resources Needed:

  1. Image of Cardboard Giant Plastic Tap by Benjamin Von Wong (see bottom of lesson plan)
  2. Introductory/Instructional Video by  Benjamin Von Wong
  3. Downloadable Cardboard template of Von Wong’s “Giant Plastic Tap” designed by Wintercroft in collaboration with Students Rebuild
  4. Materials: glue stick, hot glue gun, scissors, box cutter (best for cutting cardboard), brown paper tape, corrugated cardboard (recycled delivery boxes work well), long metal wire (to make a needle), pliers, fishing line, metal hole puncher (or a drill that can make holes in plastic, tall light stand (more detail is given when you download the template)

Introduction:

  1. This lesson works well following the Giant Plastic Tap (Introduction) lesson.
  2. Tell students they are now going to work together to build a giant plastic tap!

Lesson:

  1. Follow the directions in the Downloadable Cardboard template of Von Wong’s “Giant Plastic Tap” designed by Wintercroft in collaboration with Students Rebuild

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Display the class Giant Plastic Tap in a prominent location in your school. 
  2. Engage other classes by providing a space for students to post their reactions.
  3. Share photos of your Giant Plastic Tap on social media to do your part in raising awareness of the harm plastics cause, remembering to tag: @bluewaterschoolsnetwork, @wintercroft, @vonwong, @studentsrebuild, @solgaardnyx and use the hashtags: #StudentsRebuld, #ExtraordinaryEarthProject, #GiantPlasticTap, #TurnOffThePlasticTap
