NO MORE PLASTIC (Make a Poster)

SUBJECTS Language Arts, Media, Science, Social Studies
GRADE LEVEL Primary (K-3)
PLEDGE 3 - Plastic Harm to Water

Resources Needed:

  1. No More Plastic by Alma Fullerton
  2. This lesson is best following the lesson, No More Plastic (Introduction)
  3. Poster paper, writing materials

Introduction:

  1. With a partner, or in small groups, have students discuss the difference between single use and reusable plastics, and then think of examples of single use plastics. Take up and record answers on the board.
  2. Next, challenge students to look at the listed items of single use plastics and consider whether the plastic is actually needed, what its purpose is, and what would happen if this single use plastic was eliminated. What would change?
  3. Tell students that you’re going to read, No More Plastic by Alma Fullerton and that you want them to listen for ways to go plastic-free. Make a list on the board as you read.
  4. After reading, ask students if they can think of other alternatives to plastic  that can be added to the list.

Lesson:

  1. Tell students that they will now choose an example from the list of plastic-free solutions and make a poster to persuade others to adopt this idea.
  2. Hand out poster paper and material and have students create their posters.

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Display posters on a bulletin board, around the school, or make a class book that could be shared with other classes or taken home to share with families.
