The Story of Bottled Water (Media: Infographic)

SUBJECTS Geography/History, Language Arts, Media
GRADE LEVEL Junior (4-6) / Intermediate (7-8)
PLEDGE 3 - Plastic Harm to Water

Resources Needed:

  1. Video: The Story of Bottled Water by The Story of Stuff
  2. Infographic maker such as Canva (optional)

Introduction:

  1. Ask students, Where do you think the idea of bottled water came from? Why do we bottle water? How long do you think we have had bottled water?
  2. You may want to have the class brainstorm/list pros and cons of bottled water.
  3. Take up as a class.

Lesson:

  1. Show the video The Story of Bottled Water.
  2. Ask the students what they think are the main ideas of “The Story of Bottled Water”. You may want to re-play the video so that students can jot down notes, numbers and questions.
  3. After the second viewing, have a class discussion guided by, What surprised you in this video? What are you wondering about? What can we do as a community to address this issue?
  4. As one of the first steps in addressing a social/environmental issue is to educate and inform, tell students they will be creating an infographic to educate the school community about the issues surrounding bottled water.
  5. With examples, teach the students the basics of creating an infograph. Post the key numbers from the “The Story of Bottled Water” for reference.
  6. Have students work in groups of 2-3 to draft and sketch out their infographic. Once they, with your support, have reviewed the information for accuracy, they can go ahead and create the infographic. Some students may choose to create by hand or with a computer graphic program such as Canva.

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Display posters around the class/school.
  2. Create an Infographic Fair and have other students come and learn about the effects of bottled water.
  3. Have students create a campaign to ban or phase out bottled water in their school, if it hasn’t been already.
