Resources Needed:
- Treaty Words: For as Long as the Rivers Flow by Aimée Craft
- Full Lesson Plan by Kareena Butler for Annick Press, from which this lesson is adapted.
Introduction:
- Following the introductory lesson, Treaty Words: For as Long as the Rivers Flow tell students they are now going to choose a page/passage and create music or a soundscape to accompany a read-aloud of the chosen page/passage.
Lesson:
- Tell students they are going to do a visualization activity. Have the class close their eyes and imagine they are sitting on the bank of the river where the girl in the story and her Mishomis sit and watch the river pass them by. Read pre-chosen passages to the class, such as found on pages 11, 14-15, 18-20, 28-29, 38.
- Divide the class into small groups and have them choose one of the passages from above, or their own, from the book (or you may want to assign different passages to each group).
- Have students work together to choose what sounds might be heard in that passage/setting and decide who will make which sounds. One student may want to act as the conductor (pointing to group members to indicate their turn, raising or lowering their hand to indicate volume, etc.), while the rest of the group is the ‘orchestra’ using their voices and/or body percussion to create sounds.
- Have each group present their soundscape to the class while their selected passage is read aloud.
