What Is Groundwater? (Introduction)

SUBJECTS Language Arts, Science
GRADE LEVEL Primary (K-3) / Junior (4-6) / Intermediate (7-8)
PLEDGE 1 - Protection of Water

Resources Needed:

  1. Video, What is Groundwater? by KQED QUEST
  2. KWL Chart (see attachment below) for each student or a chart paper for whole class participation

Introduction:

Ask students what they already know about groundwater. Record what they already know and what questions they may have on a KWL Chart.

Lesson:

  1. Show the video, What is Groundwater?
  2. Revisit the KWL Chart to see if the video answered any of the questions. Record under ‘What I Learned’ on the KWL Chart. Add any new questions students may have to the chart for future research/discussion.
  3. Draw attention to any new vocabulary. Begin a class Water Glossary (or students add to their personal glossaries).

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Have students research questions from the KWL Chart that weren’t answered in the video.
  2. Have students research the groundwater in your area and come up with three interesting facts!
  3. Have students try the Groundwater Word Search by Water-Use It Wisely (independently or in pairs) to become more familiar with water vocabulary.
