GRADE LEVEL Primary (K-3)

Resources Needed:

This lesson was developed and contributed by Holly Little.

1. Book: Drop: An Adventure Through The Water Cycle by Emily Kate Moon

Introduction:

1. Show students the front of the book and share the title. Ask them what they think the book will be about.

2. Ask the students to tell you what they think of when they hear the word drop.

3. Ask students the following questions (these can be done orally, as writing prompts, or you can create a list on the board):

  • Where and when do you see or interact with water?
  • Where do you think rain comes from and where does it go once it hits the ground?

Lesson:

1. Read the book Drop: An Adventure Through The Water Cycle by Emily Kate Moon

2. Review Drop’s journey. Where did she start and where did she go?

3. Teach students the names for the 3 states of water: solid, liquid, and gas. Ask the students to remember what Drop was doing at each of these 3 states.

4. Have students draw a scene to represent the 3 different states of water, including Drop in each of the scenes.

Follow Up Activities:

1. Have students use their bodies to demonstrate their understanding of the three states of water. The front of the book gives great phrases for this (liquid: go with the flow, solid: hold still, gas: s-t-r-e-t-c-h).

2. Explore states of water using ice cubes on a tray or in a bowl. Have students observe the changes they see.
