Blue Floats Away (Visual Arts: Collage)

SUBJECTS Science, Visual Arts
GRADE LEVEL Primary (K-3)
PLEDGE 1 - Protection of Water

Resources Needed:

  1. Blue Floats Away by Travis Jonker
  2. Construction paper in various colours, glue, scissors, crayons

Introduction:

  1. Read, Blue Floats Away  following Blue Floats Away (Introduction) lesson using discussion questions.
  2. Review or introduce the water cycle and the 3 states of water (this art activity would be ideal after a lesson on the water cycle to help reinforce understanding, or simply following a review/discussion of the author’s note at end of the book).

Lesson:

  1. Tell the students that they are now going to show Blue in the 3 states of water using the same paper collage style of Blue Floats Away.
  2. Provide the art materials, along with a paper in the size of the final product you’re looking for, and let them create! (You may want to divide the paper into 3 equal sections first or let the students fold the paper into equal sections on their own.)
  3. Have students label each section with the state of water they have shown Blue in.
  4. This can also be done illustrating the full water cycle.

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Display finished pieces and have students explain the water cycle using their art.
