PLEDGE
1 - Protection of Water
Resources Needed:
- Rosemary Mosco’s Climate Comic on ocean acidification (Printable version here)
- Think, Puzzle, Explore routine from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education’s Project Zero
Introduction:
- Have students read the comic (individually or in pairs, on screens or as print outs).
Lesson:
- Display the following questions on the board, ideally one at a time:
- What do you think you know about this topic?
- What questions do you have about this topic?
- How might you explore your questions about this topic?
- For each question, give students a few minutes to respond individually in their notebooks in their preferred format (e.g. full sentences, bullet points, sketches), then have students share in small groups or with the full class. It can be helpful to make note of any misconceptions that arise so they can be addressed appropriately later on.
- From here, you could move right into your own lesson(s) on ocean acidification. Alternatively, you could work together as a class to organize all the questions into a productive order and have students start researching answers using their textbooks, or online sources. The teacher could add any important questions that are missing.
Follow Up Activities:
- Together as a class, find out which politician(s) you could write a letter or email to in order to express your concerns regarding ocean acidification, and write to them.
