Nature Is Speaking: Water (Poetry)

Resources Needed:

  1. Video: Nature Is Speaking – Penélope Cruz is Water
  2. I Am Water poem template – one for each student (see attachment below)

Introduction:

  1. Ask students to imagine that water is alive and has a voice. Think about what would be important to you, if you were the voice of Water.

Lesson:

  1. Play the video, Nature Is Speaking – Penélope Cruz is Water
  2. Tell students that they are now going to write a poem from the perspective of water. They will need to think about how they feel, how they are being treated, what their wishes are for now and the future.
  3. Pass out the I Am Water poem template (see attachment below) for students to complete. 

(Some students may only be able to add one or a few words, or complete just one stanza. Others may write entire phrases. Adjust accordingly to the abilities of your students.)

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Have students share their poems orally.
  2. Take poems through the editing process, illustrate and display.
  3. Create a class book that can be shared.
