Resources Needed:
- Video: Nature Is Speaking – Penélope Cruz is Water
- I Am Water poem template – one for each student (see attachment below)
Introduction:
- Ask students to imagine that water is alive and has a voice. Think about what would be important to you, if you were the voice of Water.
Lesson:
- Play the video, Nature Is Speaking – Penélope Cruz is Water
- Tell students that they are now going to write a poem from the perspective of water. They will need to think about how they feel, how they are being treated, what their wishes are for now and the future.
- Pass out the I Am Water poem template (see attachment below) for students to complete.
(Some students may only be able to add one or a few words, or complete just one stanza. Others may write entire phrases. Adjust accordingly to the abilities of your students.)
Follow Up Activities:
- Have students share their poems orally.
- Take poems through the editing process, illustrate and display.
- Create a class book that can be shared.
