Storm Drains (Create a Mural)

SUBJECTS Language Arts, Media, Social Studies, Visual Arts
GRADE LEVEL Primary (K-3)
PLEDGE 1 - Protection of Water

Resources Needed:

  1. Link to the, Keeping Our Water Clean / SciShow Kids video (this lesson should ideally follow the introductory lesson, Storm Drains
  2. Paper for posters (try using the reverse side of used paper) or mural paper depending on whether students will make individual posters or a large mural.
  3. Crayons, coloured pencils, markers, paint or other materials for writing.
  4. If making a class mural, have students collect items found on streets and around storm drains either from a community walk or from exploring storm drains by their homes.

Introduction:

  1. Tell students they are going to share what they’ve learned about storm drains and keeping them free of pollution with the rest of the school.
  2. Have students rewatch the video, Keeping Our Water Clean / SciShow Kids.

Lesson:

  1. Have students create messages for their posters to educate others around the importance of storm drains and why we need to keep them clear of pollutants.
  2. If creating a large mural, have students attach the found items they’ve collected around storm drains to the mural along with their messages. Students can illustrate items that weren’t collected.
  3. You may want to have students draw a large-scale storm drain at the bottom of the mural so that other students viewing the mural will know what a storm drain is.
  4. Display for other classes.

Follow Up Activities:

  1. Students may want to continue bringing in items found around storm drains to add to the mural.
  2. Have students present their mural to other classes explaining the importance of keeping storm drains free of pollution.
